Our Vineyards
Central Otago is made up of unique sub regions that have the qualities to provide outstanding wines. We have vineyard sites across this beautiful region where we source our pristine fruit to make our handcrafted wines.
The Mountaineer Vineyard - Earnscleugh Road
Our Vineyard is located along Earnscleugh Road next to the mighty Clutha River and spans across two natural river bed terraces. Soils are a mix of Molyneaux - shallow, well-drained sandy loam and deep drained sandy loam rising to 170m above sea level. The majority of our vines at this site are Pinot Noir with a small pocket of Pinot Gris included. This stunning Vineyard consistently is exposed to the dramatic extremes of very long, hot, dry summers and severe cold winters - the perfect climatic contrast to produce high-quality fruit that is then carefully handcrafted into The Mountaineer range of wines. The Vineyard is certified sustainable by Sustainable Wine Growing New Zealand.
Queensbury Vineyard
This Vineyard has a stunning north-easterly terrace location nearing the western end of Lake Dunstan. Surrounded by southern alpine ranges this gives the vines a site that has a little more shelter and less exposure to the frost extremes that other areas of Central Otago tend to experience. This site grants us fruit from the oldest vines in our growers collective and is the location of our much loved and highly acclaimed Mount Michael Pinot Gris.
Bendigo Vineyard
The Bendigo region is located in the northern slopes of the Dunstan Mountain range and weaves along the banks of the Clutha River and reaches into Lake Dunstan at the northeast end. Renowned for being the hottest sub-region we select the very best small parcels of fruit to craft our Mount Michael Isla & Bessies Block Reserve Pinot Noirs. The schist derived soils mixed with clay and quartz components & combined with the unique mesoclimate allow us the ability to select quality fruit that provides the concentration and complexity required to make our most expressive Reserve Pinot Noir Wines.
Pisa Vineyard
On the western side of Lake Dunstan and nestled gently on the valley floor of the Pisa Range is the vineyard where we select our pristine fruit for our Mount Michael Estate Pinot Noir and Pinot Noir Rosé. The vineyard is exposed to some extreme weather fluctuations that include very hot summer days and intense cool crisp nights. These weather extremes combined with the loam soils create the perfect growing environment to craft wines with a generous ripeness complemented by a bright structural acidity and elegance.
